Julian Nida-Rümelin is an emeritus professor of philosophy and political theory at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He served as Minister of State for Culture in the first Schröder cabinet from 2000 to 2002. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and has held numerous visiting professorships in the United States and Italy. Since 2018, he has been the director of the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt) and since October 2022, the founding rector of the Humanistic University of Berlin.


In recent years, JNR has been extensively involved in anthropological, epistemological, and philosophy of technology questions. He led a European Union research project on the ethics of robotics and has addressed philosophical and ethical aspects of autonomous driving and the general use of software systems in professional and private practice (Digital Humanism, Piper 2018). Translations of his work exist in English, Korean, Italian, and soon in Spanish.


His recent publications include "A Theory of Practical Reason" (DeGruyter 2020) and his bestseller "Cancel Culture - End of Enlightenment? A plea for political judgment" at Piper.


He is a recipient of the European Medal from the Bavarian State Government and the Bavarian Order of Merit.
